Exploring the World

Once kindergarteners became experts at the map it was time to draw our own map of the world with oil pastels. The students studied a map in front of them and then drew the different continents on the paper. We painted watercolors over them so the rest of the world was covered by ocean.  As we continued to learn about the world and study maps we learned about the equator. Each continent we learn about we will look at where the continent is in relation to the equator and how that affects the weather. Some of the students also noticed a “stamp looking thing” on the maps: a compass. They decided they wanted to add it to our maps next week as well as the equator! You’ll find the maps outside the classrooms at Report-Card Pickup!

This week, we kicked off our passport around the world by learning about North America, and more specifically the United States of America. We read several non fiction books about North America and added some new learning to our schema! Today we will bring home a book home with some important symbols.  Next week we will learn about some important American symbols: the American flag, bald eagle and the Statue of Liberty!

Lips the Fish

We added an Accuracy reading strategy to our CAFÉ menu this week!  We met “lips the fish” who taught us how to get our lips and mouth ready to say the first sound of the word.  We practiced using this strategy as we built stamina during Read To Self.  Both classes have reached 14 minutes of sustained, independent reading (reading the pictures, reading the words, and retelling the story).  We practiced using this strategy by reading books with the beginning sound blacked out and using Lips the Fish to help us figure out what word was missing! The students also completed a reproducible book where they had to be reading detectives and use lips the fish to help them decode.   We sent home a Parent Pipeline explaining the strategy, so when you read with your child at home, please practice the Lips the Fish strategy at home!

Ordering Numbers

We continued to study numbers up to 10 and find different ways to compose numbers. Math partners worked together to order numbers and match a number of objects to a digit. The collaborative partners had to work together to cut, glue, discuss and use teamwork to complete the tasks. No easy feat for 5 and 6 year olds! They rocked it!! We have loved watching partnerships work together and grow as a team during math.

Picture Retakes and Sibling Photos

On Tuesday, November 13 we will have picture retakes and sibling photos. If you would like your child to get retakes or have a picture taken of them with their sibling, please click on the following link:  If you would like your child to participate in retakes or sibling photos, please send us a quick e-mail so we can make sure they are on the list through the portrait company.
