Asia

We packed our bags and are ready to go to Asia! We asked questions, recorded our schema, and read books about Asia to add to our new learning. We visited amazing places like the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa and the Great Wall of China! Our little travelers are excited to learn more about these amazing places and what makes Asia such a special place. Did you know there are more people in Asia than all the people in the rest of the whole world combined? Amazing new learning! We will continue to learn about Asia through the eyes of a geographer and focus on landforms next week!

Opinion Writing

We began our opinion writing on “Writing to Make the World a Better Place”! The writers are finding “problems” within our school and community and writing for change. They began by creating posters, letters and now petitions!  Writers have been really empowered knowing that they may be 5 and 6 year olds but they can help the world by writing for change! Whether it’s telling people to wash their hands and listing out the reasons why or making posters to remind people to walk safely in the hallways, these writers can’t wait to “be the change they want to see”!

Literacy Week

Save Thursday evening, June 6, for the 2019 Family Literacy Festival celebration. You are invited from 5:30 – 7:00 to view story performances and see live literature, complete crafts, see student writing, meet a CPL representative about Summer Reading, shop the Scholastic Book Fair AND have a picnic dinner with classmates.

If students and staff read 1800 books during the month of May (look for hot air balloons in the halls which track our reading!), Ms. Davlantes will kick off our week of celebrating literacy with an Imagination Celebration on the turf Monday afternoon, June 3.

Thank you

Thank you so much for helping all of the teachers to feel so special this week! We loved the breakfasts every morning put on by the PTA and all of the gifts from the class! You all really know how to make teachers feel special and appreciated 🙂

Mother’s Day

We made a special Mother’s Day gift, so be sure to be on the lookout for that on Sunday 🙂 Enjoy your day, Moms! We love you!

Family Fitness Event

The Health and Wellness Committee wanted to give back to the community and spread the word about staying fit. We are hosting a family fitness event on May 13th. Kindergarten through 4th grade will be from 4:00 pm -5:00 pm. It will be parent vs child dodgeball. 5th grade-8th grade will be from 5:00-6:00 pm parent vs child basketball game. You MUST come with your parent/guardian in order to participate. If you have children under the age of 5, we will be providing 8th grade Hawthorne sitters to watch them in the library, so you can participate with your child. If you have any questions, feel free to contact rehermes@cps.edu.

Farewell Mrs. Bice

Mrs. Bice’s last day is today! Be on the lookout in the next few days for news that Baby Bice has joined the Bice Family! Mrs. Pesch has spent the past week in room 101 learning about the world of kindergarten in room 101. She will be a great addition to room 101! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to her with any questions or concerns: npesch@cps.edu
